OK. So each figure in Series 5 seems to have at least two bump code variants. And as they are often printed mirrored we only get so much help from the codes. They can sometimes, but not always, help in narrowing it down. In many cases Series 5 really calls for our “feel” skills. Therefore this combined guide with both feeling instructions and bump codes. I hope it will help you defeat LEGO’s schemes and only pay them once for each figure. =) Biased as it is I also want to recommend my iPhone app, Mini Collector, for keeping track of your Minifigures collections and also have this guide safely in your pocket wherever you go.
First some general feel tips
Try to sort out the parts common to most figures: The head, the body, the legs and the stand. It takes just a little bit of training to get good at this. The legs on most figures bend. The arms move. Remember that for some figures some of these “common” items are actually interesting or even missing.
Also be aware that some of the small parts can slip in between the stand and the instructions sheet or just inside the instructions sheet.
Boxer

Special items: Headgear, gloves and hands
One of the least bumpy packages. If you can locate the headgear there is a ridge around the top that feels different than all the other hats. The gloves comes as separate pieces (which are most often not attached) and the arms lacks hands.
Bump codes:

Cave Woman

Special items: Club, hair and bone.
Easiest to find is the club which is really thick at one end. Her hair is made of hard rubber that gives when you squeeze it. It has a tuft at the top/crown, made such that the bone can be snapped in place. (Which means the bone is another item to feel for.)
Bump codes:

Egyptian Queen

Special items: Dress and snake.
This is probably the easiest figure to identify in Series 5. Her dress is made like a rectangular “cone” and quite bulky. Add to this that the snake is easy to identify too. Note that her hair can be confused with a helmet, especially that of the Boxer.
Bump codes:

Small Clown

Special items: Hat, cake and legs.
The hat is round and has a narrow brim around it. The cake is quite thick making it feel a bit like a regular head. It’s designed to sit on the top of the minifigure hand so there a round LEGO-hole under it. The edge of the cake is jagged which can be felt using your nails. As this is a small minifigure its legs don’t bend. (Something it has in common with the Evil Dwarf.) They feel like a rectangular box that is open on one of the long sides.
Bump codes:

Evil Dwarf

Special items:Helmet, axe, shield and legs.
The helmet is very distinct with it’s two wings. Remember that the axe consists of three parts. The handle and then two parts for the head of the twin axe. His shield is round and has no structure on the front. The handle at the back is a bit like that of an old-school submachine gun. As with the Small Clown the legs don’t bend. They feel like a rectangular box that is open on one of the long sides.
Bump codes:

Ice Fisherman

Special items: Hood.
From Amy’s comment: The hood for his parka was the piece to feel for. If you really push your fingers against it you can feel the neck opening and the face opening which make it unique.
Bump codes:

Fitness Instructor

Special items:Boombox and hair.
She has a really blocky boombox that is easy to identify with its handle and its speakers. When you think you’ve found it, use your fingernails to feel for the checkered structure of the speakers. Note that her hair is long down her neck making it easier to separate from the hair and helmets of other Series 5 figures.
Bump codes:

Gangster

Special items:Violin case, hat and gun.
The violin case is easier to distinguish than one might think at first since it is not a “real” LEGO brick. With it’s thick brim the gangster hat is also easy to tell apart from other hats and items in Series 5. Small as it is the gun is quite easy to identify once you find it.
Bump codes:

Gladiator

Special items: Helmet and shield.
From Jørgen’s comment: The helmet is easy to identify, especially the “pointy” top on the helmet is unique. Also the shield with the little round part on the front and a handle on the back.
Bump codes:

Graduate

Special items:Hat, diploma and robe.
Imagine the hat placed upside down. It is then like a shallow bowl attached to a tile. The diploma is a LEGO tile (flat on one side and holes on the other). It’s easily missed since it sneaks away among the stand and other stuff. The robe is special since it’s a tiny piece of cloth and can’t be felt through the material of the bag.
Bump codes:

Lizard Man

Special items:Tail and lizard head.
Feel something like a wide, flat S? That could very well be the tail of the lizard suit. It’s one of those pieces that attaches to the body around the neck of the minifigure. The lizard head is like a helmet. Feels very much like a motorycle helmet actually. Though one with a nose. =)
Bump codes:

Lumberjack

Special items: Axe.
From Jørgen’s comment: Here I find the axe quite easy to identify. “Look” for a round stick like object. Follow to the ends to locate the head of the axe.
Bump codes:

Royal Guard

Special items:Helmet and rifle.
You almost can’t miss the helmet of this figure. It’s really high and bulky with a structure you can feel throuh the material of the bag. It can be a bit hard to find the rifle, but when you do it really feels like what it is. Maybe it can be confused with the fishing rod of the Ice Fisherman, but again, there is that helmet.
Bump codes:

Detective

Special items:Hat and magnifying glass.
Looked at the hat of Sherlock Holmes? That’s the kind of hat we’re talking about here. It has brims on both the front and the back, but not on the sides. Look for the magnifying glass (excuse the pun) too. It is like a miniature of the real thing. (Even magnifies a little). It has a really round glass with distinct edge.
Bump codes:

Snowboarder Guy

Special items:Snowboard and hat.
Well, to no surprise he has a snowboard which is quite easy to identify. His ski hat is like a round bowl and has no brim (of course it has no brim).
Bump codes:

Zookeeper

Special items:Monkey, hair and banana.
It’s not as easy to identify the monkey as one might first think. But once you find this odd piece and start feeling it you eventually can find the hand that it is holding above its head. The Zookeepers hair is the only hair in Series 5 with a pony tail. The banana can get lost among the other stuff in the bag since it’s so small, but when you find it and already suspect this is the Zookeeper bag it really feels like a banana.
Bump codes:

It is a living guide
I have collected 11 of the 16 figures myself so far. And helped some guys at the store find the Snowboarder Guy, only to realize there was no one for me left. =)
Please add your tips in the comments. You might have figured (*cough*) out some things that we haven’t covered in the guide yet. I’ll update this guide as I find out more.

Thankx, your website is just great. Bumpcodes and the “touch & feel methods” are really helpful. Thanks for noting the important pieces! :)

This series has been my first experience with trying to pick out minifigures for a complete set. We managed to guess all 5 for 5 tonight! I felt silly in the Walmart going through boxes of minifigures, but it was fun. Tonight we got the zookeeper, graduate, lumberjack, ice fisherman, and lizard man tonight. I guess living in a small town helps because our Walmart had an entire endcap of nothing buy boxes and boxes of them.
Nov 13, 2011 @ 04:30:04
I was wondering what the easiest part to feel for is on the Evil Dwarf. Also I am not sure if I am the only one with this problem, but the first time I looked for a series five minifigure I got the Gladiators helmet mixed up with the Royal Guards hat. So watch out.
Nov 21, 2011 @ 11:29:15
The best way is to look for the legs. First find the part of the legs that goes into the body, Then see if the legs bend. If they don’t then you have stubby legs (which both the small clown and dwarf have). Next feel for the helmet, and make sure it has wings. So far I’m 3 for 4 on this. First mistake was not checking for the winged helmet which got me a small clown.

I want the Zoo Keeper and I cant find the banana. What else should I look for?
Nov 12, 2011 @ 18:37:03
Hey, I wanna get the Zoo Keeper and I cant find a banana. What else would you look for?
Nov 07, 2011 @ 03:43:38
I’m new at this, are the bumps on either side of seam? I want graduate, fitness instructor, and zoo keeper. The one I have has a rectangle piece. Indents on sides? Any clue anyone?
Nov 07, 2011 @ 23:32:41
One thing that I kept messing up on when I started was that I would keep finding a rectangular piece and thinking it was a boombox or something when really it was a baseplate. So your rectangular piece is probably a baseplate.

Sep 28, 2011 @ 21:22:31
Thanks for the tips, The lumberjack and the snowboarder codes matched but the boxer and gangster codes were different. I felt all the packages and could confirm that way better then the codes. My walmart has series 5 and it has not been gone through yet!
Sep 27, 2011 @ 22:54:29
I called Wal-Mart and they said they only had series 3. Do they have series 5 to?
Sep 19, 2011 @ 23:33:16
Does anyone know a store that sells Minifigs beside Toys R us? They run out to quickly.
Sep 27, 2011 @ 04:12:38
Ive boughten some at walmart
Sep 07, 2011 @ 23:16:01
That’s not a “monkey” with the zookeeper, it’s an APE. Other than that, thanks for the guide.
Aug 30, 2011 @ 23:52:19
The main one I wanted was the Lizard Man, and in my opinion the easiest way to feel for this one is once you find a bulky helmet shape, feel for three triangular bumps on one side. (The spikes on the back of his head.) I think the head shape can easily be confused with the boxer aside from that detail. Like Tammy I suspect the Lizard may be one of the harder ones to find, because going through a whole box I only felt one with that head shape.
I went through a whole box and the majority didn’t seem to have dot codes at all.
Aug 30, 2011 @ 21:57:21
Here’s another code for Lizard Man, with the 122B1 batch stamp:
http://img839.imageshack.us/img839/3755/imagekogk.jpg
Two bumps on the left, one on the right. I just got two of these by accident (after paying $1.99 for the app’s codes, btw.)
Aug 31, 2011 @ 20:51:31
Thanks for the crisp image. I’ll add it to the guide. And you made an app developer very happy by relaying that you payed for the Series 5 support! =)
Aug 30, 2011 @ 01:43:53
Just got a gangster with a different dot code. It is more like a boxer code.
Aug 29, 2011 @ 19:41:38
My girlfriend just picked up three random packs for me. Got two duplicates and a new Royal Guard. Thing is, one of the dups (a boxer) has a completely different face than normal. Anyone else have this happen?
Aug 29, 2011 @ 19:43:45
Wow. Nevermind, just found out the head is double sided. :X
Aug 29, 2011 @ 00:02:50
Just spent 45 minutes in the aisle at walmart & found all 16! I think these were much easier to identify than past series. The lizard man was the last I found, so may be one of the rarer ones. Found tons of monkey trainers & royal guards. Thanks for the tips!
Aug 29, 2011 @ 11:00:29
I havent seen any lego’s in walmart. What section did you find them at? The only places i have found them is Toysrus.
Aug 29, 2011 @ 16:27:18
they were on an end cap of the toy aisle with the legos. I was suprised to see them, too. It was a lot more leisurely standing in that aisle feeling all the packets than in the crowded Lego store :) I was shocked to find all 16. My husband says our “feel” techniques are just getting better, but I think they are easier this series.
Aug 23, 2011 @ 17:18:09
I also go mostly by feel. The Toys R’ Us I picked mine up didn’t have the display box out so the first 5 were hit and miss, I knew they were all different I was just a little off on what I thought was in the bag. I returned with the sheet from the bag and I am at 13 now. The only duplicates I have are Snowboarders that I picked up for a couple of friends who ride.
Aug 19, 2011 @ 20:22:00
So far I have found 16 out of 16 minifigures for my son – most on the first try. I just came back from 5Below store where they have then in stock. I got him 13 the other night and they didn’t have three of them so I got them today. The gangster is pretty easy to find once you feel for the violin case which isn’t boxy like the boom box. I also find him the duplicates that he wants. I have done this for series 3-4-5. I already found him series 1 using the UPC codes and series 2 using the bar codes. I am a minifigure maven!
Aug 19, 2011 @ 21:20:45
For Series 3 to 5 you mostly use feel techniques? I have started to get the knack of that too and find it quite easy now. The dot codes were really useful with Series 3 & 4, but with Series 5 they are not as helpful even if they can help narrowing it down a bit.

For the Ice Fisherman the hood for his parka was the piece to feel for. If you really push your fingers against it you can feel the neck opening and the face opening which make it unique. The Boxer was the hardest figure to identify. It is one of the least bumpy packages but if you can locate the headgear there is a ridge around the top that feels different than all the other hats. This took some time. I was able to discern all of the other figures (with only one duplicate – dang clown) but the boxer required a second pass through most of the packages I had left. (And I bought the whole box that our local Toys R Us had.)
Aug 18, 2011 @ 10:03:57
Wow, this is just what this guide needed! I’ll update it when I have some time with my computer.
Question, are those boxer gloves separate pieces or are they integrated with the arms?
/PEZ Sent from my iPad
Aug 19, 2011 @ 09:49:45
The gloves are not seperate pieces. He comes out of the bag already gloved up. :)
Aug 22, 2011 @ 09:44:34
Hi.
For the Boxer., one of the gloves were unattached in in my bag…. it might have falle off though,
Aug 24, 2011 @ 10:26:27
So you can detach the gloves then. What kind of hands does the boxer have?
Aug 24, 2011 @ 22:17:31
Ill add a picture in dropbox tomorrow.
Aug 28, 2011 @ 11:01:06
Hi. did you get the picture allright ?
Aug 29, 2011 @ 10:27:43
I actually missed that the picture was there. But now I’ve added it to the guide. Great pic!
Aug 23, 2011 @ 17:13:33
Amy I noticed the boxer was easiest to tell by finding the headgear then looking for the bulky hands. (Gloves).
Aug 29, 2011 @ 16:41:27
I agree. I thought the boxer was really easy once you feel the bulky hands. Just feel for the torso and you notice the hands are really thick – bend the arms (to make sure it’s the body) and then you know it HAS to be the boxer. I have felt several and they all had the hands attached (never found any with the gloves separate). The headgear itself is hard to distinguish from other helmets.
Aug 16, 2011 @ 19:52:03
Your description of the snowboarder is incorrect. He has the snowboard AND the black stand.
Aug 16, 2011 @ 20:45:25
Good catch. Mega thanks for pointing that out! Now fixed. Question. As I haven’t got this figure yet I can’t tell myself, but on the images it looks like this figure has special legs?
Aug 18, 2011 @ 04:06:48
Nope. The Snowboarder’s legs are standard minifig legs.
Aug 16, 2011 @ 12:53:16
The Lumberjack:
Here I find the axe quite easy to identify. “Look” for a round stick like object. Follow to the ends to locate the head of the axe.
The Gladiator:
Again the helmet is easy to identify, especially the “pointy” top on the helmet is unique. Also the shield with the little round part on the front and a handle on the back.
Aug 16, 2011 @ 15:59:34
Thanks! So the Lumberjack’s axe is one piece? How about his hat? Is it made of hard plastic or maybe rubber? Can you feel the brim of the hat through the bag material?
Gladiator. His helmet has a “brim” (I suspect brim is not the word for it, what is?). Does it go all around the neck?
Aug 18, 2011 @ 04:06:03
The Lumberjack’s axe is one piece. His hat is hard plastic and not easy to discern, I would focus on the axe.
There is a neck guard on the Gladiators helmet that goes from one temple to the other all the way around the back. As well as a large fin on the top of the helmet. It’s a really big piece.
Interestingly the Cave Girl’s hair is the more pliant rubber that they used for the crazy hair styles on the Exo-Force minifigs. But her give away is definitely the giant club. :)
